We often think relationships connect otherwise separate things. Standing in the water, I have begun to wonder if the opposite is true. What if relationships are not what connect things? What if relationships are the things?

Every day on the Camino I passed cows. Every time I saw them, I sent the same message: There are cows who are free. There are cows who live in sanctuaries. There are cows who choose their companions. There are cows who get to keep their babies. Never stop thinking of your freedom. Spread the word.

The world is not made of resources. It is made of relatives.

Attention determines what survives. It shapes memory, deepens grief, carries ancestors forward, and builds the worlds we inhabit. Where we place our attention may be one of the most consequential choices we make within this era of collapse.

The question followed me from Puerto Rico to the Camino de Santiago: what happens to a place when the people who built it begin to leave? A reflection on pilgrimage, belonging, and the invisible work of those who remain.

When COVID confined me to a room for eleven days, I expected illness. I did not expect an ancestor to tell me to move home. This essay explores ancestry, memory, ecology, and the strange moment when a voice I could not explain changed the course of my life.
